About Us

About mancalagame.app

We publish a free, modern browser version of Mancala — the ancient two-row sowing board game, in its widely played Kalah form — with a computer opponent at three strengths, undo, a hint, and a layout that works on any screen.

Our craft

Count, sow, capture.

Read the board, choose a pit, land the last stone where it counts. That loop is everything we design around.

What we make

A free Mancala that stays in the browser

mancalagame.app is the site behind our version of Mancala. The product is a single-player game against a computer opponent: sow one of your six pits, hunt for free turns and captures, and bank the most stones in your store.

We are not an app-store publisher and there is nothing to download. The game is the website. That keeps load times short, works on phones and desktops alike, and avoids an account wall. Wins, losses, draws, streaks, and best margin live in local browser storage on your device.

If you are comparing this to another Mancala site, this page only speaks for mancalagame.app. The rules, scoring, and opponent levels described in our how-to-play guide and FAQ match this exact build.

Our story

From carved stone to your browser tab

Mancala has one of the longest histories of any game people still play daily. We treat that as a responsibility to get the rules exactly right and the friction as close to zero as we can.

  1. 01

    An ancient game

Mancala is one of the oldest known families of board games. Rows of small holes cut into stone — the boards for sowing games — have been found at sites across the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, some dated well over a thousand years old. Sowing games are still played daily across Africa, the Arab world, and South Asia under dozens of names: Oware, Bao, Congkak, Sungka, and more.

  2. 02

    Kalah and the West

The particular two-row, six-pit version with a store for each player and a capture rule became widely known in the West in the mid-20th century, when it was standardised and sold commercially as Kalah. That is the ruleset most English speakers now mean by the single word “Mancala,” and it is the one played here.

  3. 03

    This build

mancalagame.app is an independent, modern implementation of the Kalah rules. The rules are unchanged; what is new is a wooden board that stays readable on a phone, sowing that animates one stone at a time, a computer opponent at three search depths, synthesized sound with a real mute, and quality-of-life tools — a hint and unlimited undo — for learning the game.

What we stand for

Principles behind every game

Instant to start

Open the page and a board is already set. No account wall, no download, no splash video — the stones are in the pits before you finish reading this sentence.

The rules, done straight

Standard Kalah Mancala: sow counter-clockwise, drop in your own store only, free turn on landing in the store, capture from the facing pit. Nothing house-ruled without saying so.

Yours to keep

Wins, losses, draws, your streak, and your best margin live on your device. We do not hold your record behind a login, because there is no login.

Free, for real

The whole game is free forever. No energy meters, no interstitial video ads between games, no paywall on the hint button.

Who it is for

Players who want a clean game of Mancala

mancalagame.app is a family-friendly, single-player game with no chat and no store. A poor fit if you want online multiplayer; a good fit if you want the real game of Mancala against a thinking opponent, on whatever screen is nearby.

  • Short sessions

A game takes two to six minutes. Mancala is built for a phone on the couch or a browser tab between tasks, not a long campaign.

  • Thinking, not reflexes

There is no clock and nothing to react to. The entire challenge is which pit you sow and where your last stone lands.

  • Play without an account

Your record stays on the device you played on. That is a deliberate trade: instant play and real privacy, with no cloud restore.

Why this site

How mancalagame.app is different

Mancala has thousands of implementations online. This one exists to ship a single honest, fast version — correct Kalah rules, a real opponent, and no clutter.

  • A real opponent, three depths

Relaxed, Classic, and Sharp are the same engine searching one or two moves ahead, several, or deep. Sharp defends its weak pits and reads your captures before you make them.

  • Tools that respect your time

Unlimited undo to test a line, and a hint that points at a genuinely strong pit — not a random legal move.

  • No clutter

No auto-playing video, no fake “install our app” banners, no dark patterns around the settings. The how-to-play guide and FAQ describe this exact engine, not a generic write-up.

How we build

Designed for the browser you already have

The game runs entirely on the web: fast loads, tap and keyboard controls, and progress that stays local unless you clear your browser data. We use lightweight analytics to see what helps players — never to gate the game behind a profile. The engine on the home page is the one described on our rules pages, so search results and the live game never drift apart.

  • Play anywhere

Phone, tablet, and desktop share one board. Tap a pit on a touchscreen, or use the number keys 1–6 and the H, U, N, and M shortcuts on a keyboard.

  • Progress on your device

Wins, losses, draws, streak, and best margin are stored locally. You own the continuity of your record without signing up.

  • Quiet improvement

We watch aggregate usage through Google Analytics to improve pacing and polish. Details are in our Privacy Policy — never as a sales pitch.
